Am I allowed to admit to loving my own interpretation of the characters? I wanted to show James and Lily at their most awesome here - I was saying the dialogue out loud as I wrote it to try to hear the impact of it (good thing my flatmate's away).

Yeah, so here we have the first of the three times James and Lily defied Voldemort personally and lived. I wanted Lily's defiance to be more visceral - this is a flyting, a word-battle, whereas James is more of a traditional hero. This is the James Potter who died trying to give his wife and child a chance to escape.

And now I have three chapters to wrap this all up. Let's go ^_^

You're allowed, because these interpretations are wonderful. I love how Lily uses words to fight (although her fists too). And James - I can so see the future in him, and it's sad too, even though brilliant.

Every time I reread the start of Philosopher's Stone, I grieve for these guys. (Last I taught it, both my classroom assistant and I were wet-eyed by the time I read to Hagrid turning up on Sirius' motorbike, and the boys looked at us both as if we were crazy).
