is finally up

This is really just a little bridging scene to set up that there is something weird going on with the Hogwarts' paintings. Oh, and it usually stretches out the UST a bit more, which is always a good thing.

I haven't got much to say about this one, mostly because I want to knuckle down and tackle the next chapter which should be very pretty and strange.

I'm beginning to get back into the swing of this, after two days curled up with a pile of books ignoring fandom. (If anyone's looking for a book rec for a pre-teen boy, Mark Walden's HIVE: Higher Institute of Villainous Education is good fun - kids with the potential to be supervillains get kidnapped to a secret island base to be taught their craft by staff including headmaster Dr Nero and a stealth teacher who has been accidentally transformed into a fluffy white cat. Very silly, but the type of silliness that age group like).

Though my child is younger, I thought the HIVE book sounded like a potential winner as a read-to-me chapter book--silly premise-- so I've requested it from the public library. I'll let you know how it goes over. My kid is very good at understanding complicated stories, but he also gets scared by things that other kids can hear without batting an eye.

The one thing which did irritate me a little was a certain amount of mockery of the one fat kid in the class. I read it optimistically as merely the point of view of the already fairly villainous protagonist, but it would be something I'd stop to discuss and analyse if I was teaching the book.

Of course, my favourite books to teach from that maturity/difficulty level are Holes and Private Peaceful.
