I'm reading from the end of the alphabet, so this is list number one.
Further Notes on Botanical Discoveries (Tom Stoppard, Arcadia) - If you've ever seen this play, read this. It's in the form of a playscript and, like the original, blends two eras with subtle skill. It's got philiosophy and wit and subtle snobbery and lots of Valentine, who was one of my many literary crushes when I was in school. :)
Before (Tamora Pierce, Tortall series) - this is a fantastic look at a young George just after he became the rogue. It's also Liam/George, which is a bonus (there's a lot of good George-slash this year and I welcome it) but it's really about George and the way he's so in tune with his city. It's as much about George's love affair with Corus as his encounter with the Shang Dragon. Gorgeous character work and the atmosphere is perfect.
How Squire Alan Learned the Noble Art of Pranking (Tamora Pierce, Tortall series) - loved this one. Sweet and funny and focussing on Alanna's friendship with Gary, which satisfies my ongoing affection for neglected secondary characters.
Molten Metal and Minature Trees (Tamora Pierce, Circle of Magic universe) - this is all about the friendship about Daja and Briar, and Daja recovering from her broken heart with a lot of support from Briar. It's warm and comforting and has a perfect Daja-voice.
Holy Days of Gramaryem (T.H. White, The Sword in the Stone) - this is very much Sword in the Stone fic, before the bitterness of the later books, and I loved it. It's a lovely slice of life.
Only Revolutions (Susan Cooper, The Dark is Rising) - I wish I'd written this. It's a stunningly beautiful at Jane's efforts to make sense of her dreams and sense of loss.
The Ascent (Susan Cooper, The Dark is Rising) - the standard of DiR fic is always high and this is another stunning piece. Like the books themselves, it's full of menace and powerful questions without direct answers.
Snow White and Rose Red (Susan Coolidge, What Katy Did) - it's Red Rose/Clover and the voice sounds so like Coolidge it's uncanny. Bittersweet.
Your Own Heroic Journey (Sky High) - a perfect look at Ron Wilson's time at Sky High, with lots of the adult characters as teenagers.
Gift (Sharon Shinn, Samaria novels) - Rebekah's wedding. Thoughtful and optimistic and this author writes a perfect Rachel.
