I think the reason the Arthurian cycle fascinates me is because it collapses from within. They sow the seeds of their own destruction and it's there all through the great chivalric years - Mordred is conceived at the very start of Arthur's reign and from there it's all an exercise in hubris in trying to create a perfect court of mortal men.
