Revealing because things seemed to have fizzled out entirely over there. Anyhow, I wrote Thrift for [livejournal.com profile] runningsissors

Title: Thrift
Rating: R
Character(s)/Pairing(s): Merlin/Morgana (Merlin/Nimueh)
Word Count: 7330
Summary: hagridden: adj. i) suffering from nightmares ii) suffering from overwhelming fears and anxieties iii) Obs. ridden by a hag, or witch, causing nightmares
Warning(s): a brief moment of dub-con, creepy lust spells that mess with someone's dreams. Spoilers up to 3:13.
Notes: Several of your prompts are mashed into this – the thrift on Tiree (though this is mostly set on a Merlin-ish Colonsay), the use of the elements, the darker side of magic. I chose to interpret Morgana's reaction at the end of the last episode as suggesting that Morgause is dead. Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] clevermonikerr, who betaed this at the very last minute.

Despite the warnings and pairings, this is really just a story about Morgana. The prompt that caught my eye most here was this picture of thrift growing on Tiree. Now it so happened that I spent two weeks last summer backpacking around the Inner Hebrides, so I immediately started to think about islands and a place where all four elements could be held in balance: a fire on the beach, beside the sea with the sky above. While I was island-hopping, I'd read a history of the Clearances, when so many crofters were brutally evicted, and so I mixed that in as well - the islands are empty, after Uther's purges, and become a symbol of just how broken the land is too. The whole story is about bringing things back into balance; about Morgana being isolated enough to step back and see how people have used her, and how that then ties in to the rise of Arthur and her claiming an alternative source of power on the Isle.

The island is Colonsay; the beach where most of the story takes place Kiloran Bay:

Nimueh is as broken and twisted as the land itself, but she's still a great priestess. Having her teach Morgana was one of my starting points for the mending of Albion. She's meant to be wise sometimes here, creepy as fuck at other times, and even occasionally pitiful. The hagriding seemed to fit her character well, and it tied her and Morgana and Merlin together to give the story a shape. It's not enough for Morgana to understand that she is has been used and break free - she has to stop doing exactly the same thing herself.

Thinky thoughts aside, however, my favourite bit of this is the section where Morgana sees into everyone's dreams and Leon's making bread. Because that just came out of my typing hands without any conscious thought, and seemed too right to cut. This is my Leon canon now.
