is here

The prompt had me puzzled for a while. Then I read it again and the phrase various sketches of early Big Wheel devices snagged my attention. They were already inside a painting - why not the sketch of a fairground. I wanted it have a very particular ambiance - it's an old-fashioned funfair. There are no rollercoasters or even dodgems here.

The big emotional confrontation here, of course, is James and Lily. Up until about lunchtime today I was planning to put this right at the end, but then I thought it would fit better here, especially if I didn't close it off neatly.

Regulus is only here because I suddenly remembered that I'd left him tied to the tree and had to do something to ensure he wasn't dead. He's due to come in useful thematically soon, though, because I finally figured out that this is a story about the prisons we put ourselves into. I can feed pretty strings of imagery through a story, but themes have to hit me around the head before I notice them, which means I rarely integrate them well. Gah.

I'm finding Dumbledore's voice much easier than I did in the past, possibly because I have Grindelwald's snark to bounce it off. I took out a long ramble about a mirror who sang Vera Lynn's greatest hits, though. It wasn't really the moment.

Right, two to go, and I'm all set up for an all-nighter. I have music, multiple sources of caffeine, and the traditional dawn gin and tonic waiting. Let's see if I can finish one of these while it's still August somewhere in the world. I don't pull all-nighters very often these days, but I still reckon the hour between 2 and 3 is the worst. Once you get to about 3.30am, there's no real point to staying up and it becomes far less tempting. And, hey, only two chapters - I may not need the whole night.
