I suppose, when it comes to these epic in a month stories, I'm not even trying to write something literary or analytical. I'm not even a 100% fussed about canon - there are many books out there that I love more than these and I think of it more as something to bounce off and build from rather than something to explore. I've been thinking more and more about what I'm writing, and I've come to the conclusion that I'm writing pulp.

Now, that's not a bad thing. It's fun and fast and brightly coloured, with preposterous plot twists and silly one-liners and, y'know, pirates. What's odd is that I'm not usually a pulp writer. I've been chipping away at my novel for five years and I've still got five chapters to go. I'm all about epic worldbuildings and slowly unfurling character arcs and the most important relationships in any story being friendships. Maybe that's why I'm writing a romp now, because I somehow needed a change of pace (if so, I hope it sends me back refreshed because after a productive year, I've suddenly ground to a halt again on the book).

Meh, I'm waffling. Okay, so this was all about letting the de-aged boys play and establish their characters a little. Grindelwald is a very pouty little Dark Lord. Young!Albus is as polite as he is prejudiced. Lily feels betrayed. Oh, and Sirius gets to snuggle for half a sentence, because this is supposed to be a R/S fic. That's it, really.

This is exactly why I write fanfic (when I do write fanfic): sometimes you just need to write something that's fun and low-pressure. And for all your deprecation, your fic is still ten times better than most of what's out there. :)

Also, you're reminding me that I need to read more of your non-fic stuff!

Ah, I know my fic is competent, but it still worries me. Am I cheating readers by not giving it my best, or are these silly, off the cuff things actually better than the things I sweat and brood over (because, yes, I know perfectly well why there's such a huge comment disparity, but sometimes I fret, y'know)?

I am quite enjoying this "pulp" as you call it - and I wouldn't call it that at all, btw, but yes, your word. Isn't the point of [livejournal.com profile] dogdaysofsummer be fun & to indulge our love of R/S? I would say you are doing both and going beyond that:D

Pulp isn't a bad thing. It's just a difference in approach. One big thing that fandom has taught me is to develop my sense of audience, which is incredibly useful and does add to the fun.
