*giggles*. I hope you guys enjoy reading this as much as I did writing it.
In an honest Service, there is thin Commons, low Wages, and hard Labour; in this, Plenty and Satiety, Pleasure and Ease, Liberty and Power; and who would not balance Creditor on this Side, when all the Hazard that is run for it, at worst, is only a sower Look or two at choaking. No, a merry Life and a short one shall be my Motto. - pirate Bartholomew Roberts
Since I worked out the overall sense of plot for this, I've been intending to do at least one AU slot where they stumble into some sort of charm and find themselves in another world without the baggage of the war. I was hoping I'd get a prompt that would allow for pirates, but had a couple of other possibilities in mind. Today's prompt, with all its interrogation of reality, was just perfect.
The technical challenge with this one was to gradually move away from the purely pirate-ish feel. It starts off very formal, but Remus' dialogue and narrative should get steadily more modern as he realises that something is amiss. That said, the opening section was gleefully fun to write. Poor harried Dr Lupin and his terrible fear of matrimony *snerk*
Sirius is a lot pushier here than he is in the main plot, possibly because he's less damaged and doesn't have the same guilt tangled into his history with Remus (though I wish I'd had the scope to go into his and James' backstory. Maybe I'll come back one day and do this properly). Remus is still taking oblivious to new levels, but he's a bit more open to Sirius' ploys here. The thing is, Sirius really loves this life, and suddenly the illusion is swept out from under his feet, so he gives up on his slow seduction and just seizes his chance. Remus surprised me a little - I usually write him as the more controlled of the two, but he lost it here.
