Oh. Looking back, I think you can read it that way (as good as dead) (the possibility crossed my mind) but for some reason, the first time it was mentioned ("the news of the Longbottoms’ deaths") I got it into my head that this was an AU, and nothing definitive was ever said to disabuse me.
